Book Project 1: Room

What we are offering for you to play today is a video game inspired by the book Room by Emma Donoghue.  You will have to put yourself in Jack’s shoes and help Ma escape from Room.  You will be Jack and you will be put to the test; if you can escape from Room without getting caught by Old Nick, you will save Ma and gain your freedom.  If you get caught you will lose and Jack will have to go back to Room.
This is the scene where you will begin the video game; it represents the time when Ma and Jack hatch an escape plan.  In the plan Jack will play dead and be rolled up in the rug when Old Nick makes daily visit.  This is their only chance to get out of Room. If  Jack gets out of Room successfully they can get away from Old Nick and be happy and explore new things that Jack has never seen before.  Jack went over the plan in his head many times, but he was getting nervous that he would fail and be buried with the worms. During the escape attempt, after Jack’s “body” is being taken away by Old Nick, he does make a mistake, “I’m slipping and crashing across the truck, my head hits on something sore, I shout by accident arghhhhhh!.  When he hits his head on something Old Nick comes out and finds Jack, but Jack jumps out of the truck and runs away.  Jack sees a man walking toward him, but he was so frightened that he couldn’t say anything.  Old Nick swipes Jack away and carries him back to the car, but Ajeet, the man tells him that his daughter is bleeding.  All of a sudden Old Nick drops Jack and leaves.  Jack has never been outside of Room before, but if he can get away from Old Nick he will be a normal five year old exploring the new world.  Jack had to go through all these obstacles to get out of Room and save Ma.  You will have to perform all of these tasks and save Ma in this video game.

In the room you will have everything that was in the book like the rug and the bed.  You will have to think of ways to escape the room until you get it right, but you will have to persuade Old Nick about your death.  On the next level and you will be carried out by Old Nick, but to beat this level you need to be very still and not get caught by Old Nick.  Old Nick will carry you to the truck, like Jack thought to himself “I stay stiff stiff stiff.” If you don’t keep still then Old Nick will know that you are alive and not dead and bring you back to Room.  Next you will be in Old Nick’s truck trying to get out of the rolled up rug.  You will struggle for a while to get out of it, but you need to keep on trying so you can save Ma.  “Old Nick’s going to take me to a place and bury me and the worms crawl in the worms crawl out. If you don’t get out of the Rug then you will be buried and Ma will never be saved.  This is a way you can lose the game if you get stuck in the Rug.  After you get out of the rug you will advance to the next level and you will be running down the street and you will meet Raja, Ajeet, and Naisha and they will help you get away from Old Nick.  You will meet Officer Oh and ride with her to find Ma in Room. You will have to tell Officer Oh all about Room so they can track it down.  You give her little clues about Room like the skylight when she asks where the light comes in at during the daytime.  Each little clue you give her will help her find Ma.  When they find Ma the game is over.  You would be free from Old Nick and you and Ma can live your lives the way you want to live them---free.

Book 1

The book I am reading is Room. I really like the book because I never want to put it down.  I think the book is very interesting and I like how it is told from the perspective of a five year old.  You are always wanting more because you want to know what is going to happen next and see if Ma and Jack will every escape from the room.  I am over half way done with this book and I can’t wait to see how it will end.

Post 2: What is a book?

A book is an adventure, which allows you to go off into another world.  You get to imagine everything about the book and escape from reality for a little bit.  I do agree with Nancy Jo Sales that it’s something about the having a physical book in your hands and how you can feel the pages when you turn the pages of the book.  You can’t feel the pages of the book on a Kindle.  Also, for me I like to see how close I am to the end of the book because it makes me excited to think about how the author will end the book.  I don’t think it is the same having a Kindle instead of a hardback book because when you are older you can pass down the book to your kids and it can be passed down through generations.  Each generation can get the same book and see what you said if you made notes in the margin.  I think there is something “magical” about a real book because you can put little side notes in the margin and it adds a little something special for the next person that reads the book next.  It also makes it a little personal because when you are older and you reread a book you can see what you have thought about it when you first read it. To me there is something special about having a book in your hands and feeling each page go by and seeing how much is left of the book.  A Kindle just isn’t the same to me it’s another electronic that we don’t need even though it can carry more than one book.  I just think in our society today we use to much electronics and we can’t seem to get away from them.  In my opinion I do think reading a hardback book is better because you get away from reality and from using electronics.

I love to read for many reasons, one reason is it takes you to another world and you get to imagine how the characters look and the setting.  I have a lot of books that I have really liked, but one of my favorite books that I have read is The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.  You instantly fall in love with the characters Augustus and Hazel. Once you start reading it you won’t be able to put it down.  You really do feel like you are there with them throughout their adventures.  John Green does such a good job with this and you become attached to this book.  I have read many other books by him, like Looking for Alaska and Paper Towns.  They were very good, but I did like The Fault in Our Stars better.  One reason, I liked it better than the others was the plot you got so caught up in it and you always wanted to see what happened next.  In my opinion it was more exciting than the other books by him.  At times in the book you do feel sad for Augustus and Hazel because they do have cancer, but all in all the book was great and it was very moving.  This book is one of the best books I have ever read and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a book to read.
